Q: How did u get into dance movement therapy?

Answer: I have been dancing since the age of four. I started with my training in Bharatnatyam, and then I switched to Mohiniyattam and then tried out Kathakali and stuck to it. In college, I also explored different dance styles like hip hop. After this, I got into dance movement therapy and did my course at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai. However, I am yet to receive my degree in dance movement therapy.

Q: How is dance therapy helping people? So, dance movement therapy is not in trend and is not famous in India. But, the community is constantly growing and helping people balance mentally and physically because it helps to achieve emotional, social and physical cognitive skills. It’s helping people to cope up, which is very important in today’s time. It will surely boom in the coming years. Q: Do you think there are enough opportunities for dance therapists? As a dance movement therapist, opportunities are to be created because mental health service is required everywhere, whether in corporate or personal lives. Q: How effective is classical dance as therapy? When we talk about classical dancing, the first thing that comes to our mind is performance - Abhinaya which is one way to express how we feel. And, dance movement therapy helps people express themselves better so that they don’t have anything piled inside them. It will help them mentally and physically. Q: How has dance impacted your life? Dance has always been my way of venting out and expressing myself. It has helped me in keeping balance, especially in times like the Covid-19 pandemic. Without movement, I don’t think I would have survived this time so gracefully. So it has played a vital role in my life.
