Powering the Indian Armed Forces With India’s largest Electric Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs) and EVs

In 2016, the Indian Armed Forces suffered one of its worst losses when four heavily armed terrorists launched a grenade attack at Uri camp. Many lives could have been saved if only Indian soldiers had access to advanced equipment during counter-terrorism operations To address this pain point, Vibhakar and his friends (co-founders) decided to develop Unmanned Systems to aid and safeguard the lives of the Indian Armed Forces.

Tell us about your startup, Torus Robotics.

Torus deals with Unmanned Ground Vehicles for defence and Axial flux motors for both defence and EV markets. At Torus, we built India’s largest Electric UGV for DRDO and are currently making high-density EV motors called Axial Flux motors.

What was the idea behind setting up a UGV for the defence sector and how will it help the Indian Army Jawans deployed at high altitudes and difficult terrains?

During our college days, we were actively involved in the development of several types of EV and robotics systems. Being patriotic, we could not see the difficulties being faced by the armed forces at the borders. That is when we decided to contribute to the Indian armed forces through technology.

We designed our product Torus UGV (under development) as a force multiplier for the jawans for high altitude and low-temperature conditions with our combined knowledge of EV and robotics technology. The product is intended to aid the jawans for logistics, surveillance and even combat.

What kind of electric motor are you planning to use for the UGV and how will it be of maximum advantage for the defence sector? Having our UGV’s power train electric, we are incorporating our own power train system with the help of our Torus axial flux motors that are extremely compact, highly resilient to conditions with huge power density. This provides various benefits over the other conventional systems such as, • 10% less cost • 50% compact • 30% more efficient and more range Our UGV is operated in two modes, fully autonomous and remotely piloted. Tell us about Government recognition and support from the Army Design Bureau for you innovation? The government recognised us through our MARS UGV product for the DRDO. We have also signed MOU with BEML to develop UGVs during the Aero India 2021. Our MARS was put on display and our motor technology was demonstrat. ADB is a major source of initial support for any defence startup as they really bridge the gap between the innovators and the army's demands. Likewise, Torus received support from ADB for understanding the requirement more clearly. ADB is also hosting a UGV event by the end of the year.
