DNA OF GEOSPATIAL DATA IS PRECISION AND ACCURACY

Somnath Marthi

Interview

SOMNATH MARTHI BELIEVES THAT GEOSPATIAL TECHNOLOGY IS GOING TO BE THE NEXT SUNRISE INDUSTRY

Somnath Marthi is the Vice President – Defense, Aerospace and Geosciences at IIC Technologies.

He is an Aeronautical Engineer with a dual master’s degree in Economics and Public Administration. He has perfectly balanced expertise in both technology and management. He has over three decades of professional experience to his credit in the Defense & Geospatial Industry and has been instrumental in the diversification of business & managing several National projects in India as well as several large GIS projects all over the world.

He has been instrumental in delivering the first-ever digital national level cartographic database (NCDB) – Digital Vector Data Standards (DVD). He has a strong client-level project understanding and plays a key role in ensuring delivery standards to meet the client’s expectations despite several challenges.

Tell us something about IIC Technologies and what role do you play there. Also, how is IIC Technologies involved in the geospatial segment?

IIC Technologies is an ISO 27001:2013, ISO 20000-1:2011 and ISO 9001:2015 accredited provider of geospatial solutions and services for the acquisition, management, integration and dissemination of geospatial data. With a global presence, IIC Technologies provides end-to-end geospatial solutions to the Aeronautics, Defense, Government, Infrastructure, Marine, Oil & Gas, Transportation and Utility sectors.

Over the decades IIC Technologies has gathered experience across diverse geographies and industries, in disciplines like marine and terrestrial solutions, geo surveys and geophysical surveys, software development and systems integration. Our qualified teams have developed a reputation for skilled project management, technical expertise, service quality, capacity and customer service. Our multi-disciplinary project teams pull resources from each specialty to deliver single-window solutions to clients, including the software applications (integrated with other business applications). I hold the position of Senior Vice President (Defense, Aerospace & Geosciences) in IIC Technologies Pvt Ltd. I provide leadership and management capabilities to IIC Technologies and am responsible for Business Development, project evaluation, project planning and preparation towards timely delivery of projects. I also look after Total Quality Management (TQM) concepts and the implementation of ISO processes.

How do you generate geospatial data and what kind of technology do you use for the same? IIC’s uniqueness is the generation of both topographic and marine/hydrographic geospatial datasets and integration of both these data sets; this capability was garnered and harvested over the years by working on several projects in India and abroad. We use the latest technologies like Airborne LiDAR and Photography, Gravity and Magnetic sensors using Aircraft and Drones, satellite remote sensing, field data collection using ETS / DPGS equipment and shipborne hydrographic surveys. Since geospatial data comprises geographical information, how do the weather conditions and natural calamities have an impact on the accuracy of the data? The DNA of geospatial data is “precision & accuracy” which would help in effective planning and designing. Even though the effects of climatic and environmental factors play a crucial role in compromised accuracy levels due to bad data quality, thanks to the latest and modern Geospatial sensors and equipment’s which is complemented with DGPS observed ground data which improves the positional accuracies. The positional inaccuracies in the data sets lead to wrong data analytics leading to erroneous decisions. How is geospatial going to be the next sunrise industry? Until the last decade, geospatial technological applications were very much significant in R&D activities. The advent of AI, ML along with big data analytics has led to the integration of geospatial data sets with ERP / other larger databases.  In the future, all major applications related to transportation networks, E-Governance, Engineering applications, Land records, etc.,   will be developed around Geospatial data. This metamorphosis leads to greater employment potential as well as building national geospatial platforms.  What is your advice to budding entrepreneurs and startups about venturing into the geospatial space and why should they choose this sector? With the increasing demand for location-based services and the recent policy and guidelines on liberalization of Geospatial data and services, it is the right time for the startups to adopt the necessary changes in the geospatial domain very easily. The full potential of this segment was not harvested till now and it is good for Startups to develop smart solutions which will help them to build their business effectively.
